about

Along the flanks of the Calder Valley are numerous sets of stone steps. Often these steps, unlike the pleasant meanders of an ancient footpath, will descend steep and straight towards the valley bottom. These are steps of function, built to get workers from their houses on the tops to the mills and factories of the valley floor.
These pieces were made using binaural microphones, contact mics and hydrophones. The sounds of the steps are processed. The steps are scraped and struck. A million footsteps are locked in.
