It is well documented that John Cage’s 1952 piece; 4’33” is
not about silence. It is about the sound of the space in
which the piece is performed or the environment in which
a recording is listened to. It has also been noted that, to
engage silently with one’s environment for nearly five
minutes requires concentration. However, given the
framework of a performance or recording of the piece,
the mind is forced to focus on the sounds of the space.
Whilst preparing a release recently, I found the
transparent, CD shaped piece of plastic which tops a new
spindle of CD-Rs. What if this was actually a recording of
4’33”, well not a recording but a listening aid? A physical
manifestation of the silence. I went about producing
packaging using a clear plastic jewel case and acetate
Then I thought, what if I, in parallel to this virtual-physical
release, recorded a version. I built a tiny anechoic
chamber, smothered it in pillows and blankets, closed all
the doors and windows and pressed record.
