about

'Six utilitarian drones of around seven minutes duration’ is the second full length album by Mark S. Williamson released under his own name.

Better known as Spaceship, Mark’s releases of the last seven years or so have been largely focused on landscape; from a stream in Epping Forest, to ruined churches in Essex and Hertfordshire, to prehistoric monuments, to abandoned nuclear monitoring posts and finally to his most recent work exploring the landscape of his adopted Calderdale in West Yorkshire.

For this release though, Mark retreated to the studio:

“I’ve spent years carrying a bag of portable equipment around the landscape, playing live into an iPad then mixing the results at home I began to wonder what would happen if I applied some of those techniques to a more versatile studio environment. So, I freed myself from the constraints of making music about something and set out to make music that was useful for something. I’ve shied away from ever making straight-up ‘ambient’ music, but I’d be naïve to think some of the Spaceship material isn’t used as such so I made these pieces to be used in whatever way the listener sees fit. For meditation, sleep, writing or whatever else. I hope it gets used.”
