about

"[a] fine set of rough-hewn instrumentals' - The Wire

" [A] record that celebrates the great outdoors and is utterly charming" - Terrascope

Recorded wholly or partially in the field, the nine tracks of Churches & Rivers forms the first volume of a projected ‘Fields’ series. In contrast to much of Mark WIlliamson’s output, the instrumentation is mainly acoustic, the tracks were improvised and there is little use of effects or post-production. The album was conceived as a means to an end. Having not recorded for some time, Mark felt that the constraint of driving to a site and composing and recording in situ would not only be artistically stimulating, but also quick and efficient. These nine tracks then, recorded at, and influenced by, nine sites, probably form the most coherent body of work Mark has produced to date.
